Advertising and marketing on the Internet for most businesses large and small is becoming an absolute necessity these days. Particularly as most people go online and search for product before they go out and shop. This last weekend I was helping my daughter find a prom dress, first call was look on line, check suppliers in the area and compare prices. Only after that did we go and look physically at the dresses in the shops. Well basically any shop that wasn't online didn't have a chance of getting our business, and I don't think we are unusual in our approach to shopping.

Small and local businesses in particular can no longer rely on the yellow pages or local newspaper advertising. However it can be completely daunting for a small business owner to get the right presence online. They have to decide whether they are going to completely outsource there Internet marketing or learn how to do it themselves.

Neither of there options is straightforward. When I started my holiday letting business I started by trying to outsource the work. Firstly getting the website built, but while the design looked great it didn't always lend itself to being adaptable when I wanted to put in lead capture pages or display special offers. The web designer was reluctant to put things in that in his opinion spoilt the look of the pages. While it needed to look good, it also needed to sell. What I learnt was that the web designer wasn't necessarily into marketing, while my objective was very clear; I want to sell my product and the website needed to be a tool for that.

Once you have that bit straight there is still so much work to be done. You still need to work on getting to the top of the search engine listings etc or spend time and money on Pay Per Click advertising. Then there's all this buzz around social networking and marketing through Facebook or Twitter. What's that all about?
While small business owners need to embrace Internet marketing to stay ahead of the competition it's easy to lose a lot of money by outsourcing especially if you don't know what you are doing yourself. In the end there is no substitute for learning about it yourself. Pretty much like everything in running a small business. The owner needs to have a handle on what is happening and what needs to happen and when. Then and only then can they safely outsource with confidence, because they will know what to expect.

I found that getting appropriate training and mentoring was the key to being successful in any new area that I have needed to learn about quickly. Once I had learnt the processes and sequences etc, than I could start to outsource parts of the process that were time consuming or technical while keeping a clear management eye on things. In this way I have been able to build up my business online without it taking over my life completely. Having mentors means having someone when you need them, and having the answers to the questions when it is critical to make decisions and move things forwards. It took the initial effort to learn but then things levelled out and I was able to go into a more cruise state with it all.

Invest in yourself first is the key to success here. Once you have learnt what required you can plan a successful strategy for your business online.
